Sadio Mane, the renowned forward from Senegal, has opened up about his thought process in choosing Liverpool over Manchester United in 2015. Engaging in discussions with former United manager Louis van Gaal, Mane was courted to make Old Trafford his home.
Mane was candid with Van Gaal about his worries regarding limited playing time. At Manchester United, legendary names like Wayne Rooney and Ãngel Di MarÃa occupied key spots, making him uncertain about his potential role in the squad.
Eventually, Mane opted to join Liverpool, signing a contract worth â¬47 million the following year. Confident about the prospects at Anfield, Mane became pivotal to the team’s success, contributing significantly to their Champions League and Premier League victories.
Mane was also in talks with Tottenham Hotspur during this period. The prospect of playing under Mauricio Pochettino appealed to him more than a crowded star lineup at United. “I was more convinced by Tottenham than the Manchester United project, with less focus on established stars,” Mane recounted.
After a fruitful stint at Liverpool, scoring 120 goals in 269 appearances, Mane moved to Bayern Munich before signing with his current club, Al-Nassr, in 2023. At his new club, Mane’s eyes are set on winning titles. He remarks, “Dreaming big is normal. As one of the top teams, Al-Nassr aims for the league title, and it’s a target we don’t shy from.”
