The recent clash between Everton and Arsenal on December 20 led to a hotly debated incident. The Key Match Incidents Panel concluded that Everton deserved a penalty following an encounter between Thierno Barry and William Saliba. Barry reached the ball first during the 57th minute, only to be kicked by Saliba, yet the referee, Sam Barrott, failed to award the penalty. The panel’s 3-2 vote labeled this a mistake and suggested that VAR, led by Michael Salisbury, should have recommended a review.
Everton’s manager, David Moyes, voiced his dissatisfaction with the decision. He noted instances where similar situations led to penalties for other teams, citing a Fulham match two days later. Moyes questioned the consistency in how penalty situations are handled across different clubs.
Across the field, Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta refrained from commenting on the decision. While acknowledging the VAR check, he claimed he had not reviewed the footage and thus avoided any speculation on the matter.
This ruling could have swayed the Premier League title race. An awarded and successful penalty might have allowed Everton to secure a point, reducing Arsenal’s lead. Had this occurred, Arsenal would sit alongside Manchester City instead of five points ahead, with City holding a game in hand.
The debate over this decision is likely to gain more attention as the season progresses, potentially influencing the competitive landscape at the top of the Premier League table.
The panel also evaluated Newcastle’s match with Chelsea. They supported the decision not to award Newcastle a penalty following Anthony Gordon’s fall due to Trevoh Chalobah’s challenge. While agreeing with Newcastle about a potential penalty, the panel deemed it inappropriate for VAR intervention.
In another game, Tottenham witnessed midfielder Xavi Simons sent off post review of a tackle on Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. Despite complaints from Tottenham’s manager Thomas Frank about further decisions in the game, such as Liverpool’s contested goal by Hugo Ekitike, the panel upheld the decisions around Simons’ red card and the goal.
