The controversy began due to a sponsorship contract signed in 2022 worth €20 million over five years. This deal made INEOS Grenadier the “official 4×4 partner” of Tottenham. However, Tottenham ended the contract abruptly in March, citing unpaid annual fees amounting to €6.3 million, along with other amounts adjusted for inflation. The club took legal action in June.

Tottenham demanded more than €6 million in damages following the termination of the partnership, which still had over two years remaining. INEOS responded with a counterclaim seeking more than €1.2 million, alleging that Tottenham negotiated with Audi about a potential transfer of star player Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.
